Vincent Peirani, Reaching for the Stars, Barefoot

by Charlotte Brouard-Tartarin

For a long time, the accordion’s image evoked the antiquated charm of the bals musette. However, the instrument has long found its rightful place in many other musical genres thanks to performers such as Vincent Peirani. Classically trained, the versatile musician has been making his unique presence felt in the music world for almost twenty years: a much-applauded sideman for Daniel Humair, Michel Portal and Youn Sun Nah, and an actor in a film by Mathieu Amalric, he also initiates original projects which unite various influences. His residency at the Philharmonie Luxembourg during the 2020/21 season is dedicated to this trademark versatility.

The residency begins with a duo performance with his faithful partner Émile Parisien, who shines as a soprano saxophone player both in humble and virtuosic ways. Their encounters are always heartfelt and intimate and this time dedicated to tango. Later in the season, they meet again as part of a quintet which has chosen the title «Living Being» for a concert featuring repertoire ranging from Led Zeppelin’s «Stairway to Heaven» to King Arthur by Henry Purcell.

Joining up with trombone player Nils Landgren, pianist Michael Wollny and the Orchestre Philharmonique du Luxembourg, Vincent Peirani’s Luxembourg season ends with an evening that could only be found in the series «Aventure+». Tall in stature and talent, Vincent Peirani likes to play barefoot as if such grounding made it easier for him to reach for the stars.
